    Dharma Talk: Cultivating Compassion

with Dr. John Eric Baugher, Author
    Thursday, February 1, 6-8 p.m.

We are delighted to continue our Dharma Talk series on the first Thursday of the month! Each program includes meditation practice, a talk, discussion, and time for visiting.

On February 1, join Dr. John Baugher for a special evening inspired by his forthcoming book Cultivating Compassion: How Caring Can Change Who We Are (Shambhala Publications, Spring 2019) Compassion meditation practices can help us cultivate loving intentions, moment-to-moment awareness, empathetic capacities, and a willingness to extend the scope of compassion even to those we may see as enemies.  In his book Cultivating Compassion, Dr. Baugher shows how each of these dimensions of compassion can likewise be cultivated as a meditation-in-action at the bedside of those who are dying.  This Dharma Talk will include inspiring stories from Dr. Baugher’s interviews with hospice caregivers from many walks of life as well as his own engagement in contemplative end-of-life care that extends two and a half decades.  The evening will also include group discussion and participation in compassion practices inspired by Dr. Baugher’s research and experience in contemplative caregiving.

Dr. John Eric Baugher left his position as tenured Associate Professor of Sociology in 2014 and now works full-time on writing and speaking engagements that support the skillful integration of wisdom and compassion practices in healthcare, education, and leadership contexts.  His own practice has been supported by meditation training through Shambhala as well as study with other Buddhist communities.  He now practices at a Zen center in Westhampton, MA where he has also served as Tenzo.

Tea and snacks will be served. Everyone is welcome.
