Visioning Our Future- in Portland

December 3rd

Date details +
    Room: Portland

    Dear Brunswick/Portland Shambhala Community,

It seems fair to say that in the past year our community has faced some dynamic challenges and shared groundless experiences. Together, we have worked through the challenges in listening circles, community events, ongoing study and informal conversations. The difficult internal work remains an ongoing process for many of us.

However, as a governing council, we feel that this is an opportune time to refocus our attention on the future. We are asking ourselves how each member of our community might be empowered to have a say in what happens at our center - whether that looks like inviting new voices into our meditation halls, holding a program on a new topic, or engaging with the broader community in new ways. How might we move forward to welcome potentially new and different ways of doing things.

While such a potentially broad range of new directions is deeply exciting, we feel it is important to move into this space of wider possibility with a shared sense of what defines us as a community. We hope that this kind of clarity - in the form of a statement of mission, vision and values - will set parameters that can guide us in moving forward in more expansive ways while staying true to what we feel our community stands for at its core.

With a view to developing such a statement, we will be hosting a series of community meetings that will span December 3- 8 with gatherings both on and off line:

Gathering: Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Portland Center

Zoom Call*: Wednesday December 4th at 6:30-8:00 p.m.

    Zoom call*: Saturday December 7th 4:30 -6:00 p.m.

Gathering: Sunday December 8th at 12:30-2:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Center

Each session will offer a process for inviting community members' input about our core values and mission. You may wish to attend multiple sessions, or you may prefer to participate in only one. Further details are available on line (www.maine.shambhala.org) and pre-registration is requested. *The Zoom call number will be provided after registration.

We will be in touch again soon with further details about our plans for each of the sessions. In the meantime, please save the dates and feel free to reach out to any of the council members with questions or thoughts about this process.
    Sincerely,

The Governing Council of the Brunswick/Portland Shambhala Center
