Taking Refuge in the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha (also known as the Precious Three Jewels), is a ceremony at which one formally becomes a Buddhist. By taking refuge, we commit ourselves to freedom. Having exhausted our strategies of distraction, denial, and escapism, we find that learning to experience reality directly through the path of meditation is a life-affirming choice.

The three jewels of Buddhism refer to the Buddha as the teacher and inspiration for realizing our own inherent wakefulness, the dharma as the wealth of teachings guiding us along the path of personal realization, and the sangha or community who we practice meditation with and work with on generating selfless compassion.

Taking Refuge Vows represents making the formal commitment to following the path of the Buddha in one's life and therefore becoming a Buddhist.

Taking these vows enters you into the larger Buddhist community of any lineage, not limited to the Shambhala or Tibetan Buddhist community. We welcome anyone who feels inspired to participate.

For those who are preparing to take the Buddhist Refuge Vow June 21-23, this preparation day in either Portland or Brunswick is required. Also required is a letter of recommendation from your meditation instructor. If you do not have a meditation instructor there will be an opportunity to meet with one during this day. If it is not possible for you to attend on the class in Portland or Brunswick, please contact us as soon as possible.

There is a Refuge Vow Source book that will be available for all those taking the class. You wil be able to purchase the book at class for $22.00
