Welcome to the Year of the Earth Dog

Shambhala Day is Friday, February 16 this year, and we will be feasting on celebration and community time together from 5-9 pm this evening in Brunswick. Shambhala Day marks the beginning of the Tibetan New Year and represents one of the most important celebrations in Shambhala, particularly associated with reflecting upon the year that has passed, and setting our intentions for the future.

The coming year will be the Year of the Earth Dog. In the animal zodiac, dog year individuals are the most humanitarian, are selfless givers, and strive for justice and equality. They are fiercely loyal, decent, and courageous and are also magnanimous and prosperous. With the added element of earth, the energy of the dog is efficient, grounded, and vigilant.

We can all aspire to bring the generosity and stability of the Earth Dog Year into our lives and community this coming year and to further the critical work of Shambhala to transform fear and aggression into wisdom and compassion. The world has never needed it more.

Join us for good practice, good food, and good company as we celebrate the Year of the Earth Dog. At 5 pm the Shambhala Sadhana (group meditation practice for creating enlightened society) will open the evening, followed by a 6 pm potluck supper, a video New Year address by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and a short membership meeting (all are welcome to stay for this). There will then be ample time for our collective offerings of poetry, song, movement, and other creative festivities.

The New Year is also the time to open our hearts to contribute to the financial health of a local center. Consider the value and meaning of the teachings, teachers, community and physical space for practice and study in your own life and the lives of others when deciding what you might offer. Written good wishes for the New Year are also very welcome.

To sign up to bring a potluck dish: Shambhala Day 2018 Potluck Offering.

Please come, even on the spur of the moment, and bring friends and family. Bring any creative offerings you would like to share (see below). Let’s ring in the Year of the Earth Dog together!
