Important resources for program staff

Thank you so much for volunteering to staff a program. We acknowledge that our community has work to do in order to become a safe, welcoming environment for everyone to open up and learn.  Program staff, MI’s, and directors all become part of the hosting team when they are here. In preparation for your time here, we ask that you familiarize yourself with these resources.

They’ve been selected to expand our awareness around common social blind spots and to inform our community in areas that are important to participants in our programs.  To be clear – this does not mean you need to agree with everything, but that you are engaged in a heartfelt, open conversation with these ideas.

“The Work of Diversity: A Deeper Engagement (6 pages) – Interview with Sebene Selassie

“A lot of people that see the headline for this interview are going to think, “It’s another interview about diversity,” and they’re just going to ignore it. What is that resistance about? Why is this not an important part of your Dharma exploration? Because Dharma is about everything, and this is a huge part of our lives. We’re not just practicing in order to become good meditators.”

Cultural Humility Documentary (5 minutes)- This basic approach is very consistent with Shambhala values. Made for the medical field, but applicable to teacher/staff/student relationships.

‘Facing My White Privilege’ (5 pages) – Tara Brach

“One of the things I’ve noticed when the subject of racism comes up is how white Buddhist practitioners will say, “Oh yes, this is important,” but without a feeling that it really involves them, their life, or their spiritual path. And yet, you can’t be part of a population where there has been deep trauma and not be involved. We’re all involved.”
